Our Story

The story of the Artistree Community Theater was born from a conversation between founder Heather Capelle and her Artistree colleague, Katie Jo Flanagan.  As the two were teaching a class of first graders a number from the Broadway show "Frozen," they talked about how they would love to create opportunities for the Artistree teaching artists to be onstage again.  As Heather began to think of this idea, in our almost post-COVID world, she realized that many theaters in Westchester County, NY had not survived the pandemic, leaving little opportunities for adult performers in the region.

What if we could create an organization that would produce family friendly entertainment for the community to not only see as an audience member, but also be a part of on and off the stage?  Could there be a performance outlet in Mamaroneck for anyone regardless of age or financial situation to live out their passion on the stage?

Heather started making some calls and with the help of an amazing group of fellow artists, parents and performers, the idea of the Artistree Community Theater was born.

What we do

The dream of the Artistree Community Theater is to be a year-round source of family-friendly shows.  We have three goals to bring theater to our community to be performed by the incredible pool of talented local artists.

1.  New Works

Original works will be mounted through workshops and readings presented in our studio and open to the public.

2.  Theater for Young Audiences

We will partner with local public schools to create a "page to stage" format where students read a book with their class and then watch it come to life in a live performance by professional actors.

3.  Not Just Musicals

With a combination of musical theater, comedic, and dramatic plays, we will be the platform for actors, singers, dancers, and musicians to create, perform, and grow.

As we know, theater is a medium that tells stories, changes lives, and reminds us of our common humanity.  Research shows that theater-going audiences tend to have more empathy and are more apt to get involved in causes for social justice.  To have the opportunity to be the catalyst for that in our community would be the greatest gift.  We hope you will join us in supporting the Artistree Community Theater.
